FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. ---  Fort Bragg is now offering a $7,500 dollar reward for information that leads police to the people who killed a soldier last month.

Sergio Sanchez, 22, was shot to death on April 12 near Sharkey's cabaret club in Fayetteville. Detectives said that their investigation has led them outside the city to a location about a half hour away.

“Our investigators executed a search warrant earlier today in Lee county to get information regarding the Sergio Sanchez homicide,” said police spokeswoman Jamie Smith.

The paratrooper was killed outside a nightclub complex on Fayetteville's Bragg Blvd. when he literally walked into an armed robbery.

“He was doing nothing wrong. He would have given them what ever they wanted if they'd left him alone,” said Smith.

Sanchez had returned unscathed from Iraq, which made his death all the more upsetting to those who knew him.

“He just did 15 months fighting for his country, then he comes here and he gets shot by someone he's defending,” said specialist Natalisa Boone.  “It's unfair. It really is.”

As a result, Sanchez’s friends are intensely interested in the case and are following it very closely.

“They want to know what's happening and they're willing to do anything they can  to help our investigators find whose responsible  for it,” explained Smith.

Investigators are  hoping to get some help  from  folks who live in Lee County.

“We believe people there know what happened, we just need for them to talk,” said Smith.

Witnesses to the shooting outside the club described a chrome shotgun, but detectives have yet to find it.

“Our investigators found no one in the Fayetteville area had purchased a shotgun like that in the last six months or had reported one stolen, so they feel its an important piece to the puzzle,” said Smith.
