CARY, N.C. - Everyone has had a frustrating day on the road getting cut off, trying to shake tailgaters or dodging a near-miss because someone ran a red light.
In Cary, there's a number dedicated just for situations like those.
The Road Watch Complaint Line has been in place for several years, and the officers who check it daily say it's doing a good job.
When drivers see someone else driving dangerously, they can call (919) 319-4521, and leave a message.
Police say people who call should try and get a description of the other driver, and the make and model of the offending car along with a license plate, if possible.
If officers get enough information, and think the situation warrants it, they'll send a letter to the alleged dangerous driver, asking them to be more careful.
"It's been very successful," said Lt. Mark Parker. "We write perhaps 80 to 100 letters per year."
Parker said he's gotten some grateful replies from parents who, because of those letters, found out their children had been driving dangerously.
The hotline is not designed for emergency situations; if someone sees a drunk driver, for instance, the number to call is 911.
