CARTHAGE, N.C. - Nearly 30 horses with a variety of health problems have been seized from a Moore County farm by local animal control officers.

Animal Control Director Al Carter told The Fayetteville Observer that two llamas, eight cattle and 19 horses were taken on Tuesday from Hilltop Farm on Cypress Church Road to a 20-acre pasture that animal control officers rented from a farmer in Vass.

Carter said the animals' caretaker, identified as 50-year-old Billy Campbell, is charged with one count of animal cruelty. Carter said neighbors who complained about Campbell helped ferry the animals away from the farm.
